This collection consist chiefly of letters Charles M. Wyvell sent to his family and future wife regarding his experiences military service during the Civil War. He details his work as a blacksmith and the participation of his regiment in the Peninsular Campaign in the Spring and Summer of 1862. The letter of September 28, 1862, written at Harper's Ferry, probably discusses the battle at Antietam. Later, he wrote from New Bern, North Carolina, where he was assisting the army veterinary surgeons. Post war letters detail his ventures in oil speculation in western Pennsylvania, and livestock trade in North Carolina. This collection also includes an assortment of papers related to other family members, that include a tin-type photograph of Eugenia Wyvell, an invitation to Mrs. Wyvell to attend a reception at the White House hosted by President and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, and letters written by descendant that served in the armed forces during the World War II.

Charles Mortimer Wyvell was born November 1839 in Livingston County, New York. He was employed as a blacksmith near Rochester, New York, at the time he enlisted for military service in the 1st New York Mounted Rifles, in August 1861. He was discharged in August 1864. Thereafter, he first went to the Oil Creek region of Pennsylvania, where appears to have engaged in oil speculation, then to North Carolina, to venture in livestock trade .
